Project Moses – Find out more about my Puppy Video Diary…

Puppy training videos – Project Moses

This is Moses, he's an 8 week old Heading Dog (Huntaway x Border Collie) cross Labrador that I picked up from the SPCA on Tuesday 29th January 2013.  So he is a real little mix of breeds. He plays a large part in what I have named Project Moses, a video diary of the training of a young puppy from 8 weeks old by a professional dog trainer (myself).

Follow Moses

We already have hours of footage (I shall only be using the highlights!) and he's only been in our home less than 2 days. So as you can imagine we are literally catching everything on film. I shall then cut these clips into short videos that can be used for learning how to raise and train your puppy. Many of these videos will be freely available here on my blog, on my YouTube channel and on my Facebook page, and many more will be on my membership video website www.TheOnlineDogTrainer.com (read more about it here). My dream is to provide everyone with a place to go to find the answers they are looking for: how to train the perfect dog and stop all unwanted behaviours!

I've had so much fun putting everything in place and watching it work. It has not been without a few hiccups along the way but I shall include all of that so that you can see how the mistakes all become part of the journey and the learning.

Movies like this…

Last night little Moses was crying when I turned the light out and left him in his little crate alongside my two big dogs. After 5 minutes of ear piercing howling (he sounded like a 50kg wolf) I decided that the situation was perfect for me to record. I picked up my camera and calmly walked down the corridor, opened the door, and turned on the light. His howling stopped immediately and I slowly moved around the room, staying away, but filming him without actually looking at him. I said nothing and remained very calm. After 60 seconds I turned off the light and left the room. He did not make another peep until I went in to see him at 5.30am.

Yes that little trick is something that always makes me smile. It goes something like this “Yes I can hear you, Yes I am alive and well, Yes I can see that you are also alive and well and No I am not going to give you any attention for screaming or barking so go to sleep.” It may not work every time but it worked a treat last night.

  1. We adopted a 10 week old heading/border collie x labrador. He is now 13 weeks n many ways he is awesome but there are a couple little behaviour all issues that we need to sort out. First if the kids aged 9 and 6 try to get him to do something he doesn’t want to do eg: get off the couch or leave something alone, pull him out of the garden on his leash he will growl or snap at them. Secondly he will whine, bark and cry whenever I leave the room. Thirdly he is determined to have access to the couch and will sneak up onto it whenever he can then he won’t get off unless my husband or I are the ones to firmly demand he gets off and then he does it very quickly. And lastly he jumps up on and nips at the kids when they are playing. I realise he is young so some of these issues are a matter of development and ongoing training but the growling and snapping concerns me. Any suggestions?

    1. Hi Leigh, yep. My suggestion is that you need a complete training program. None of those are really issues that one can answer in any decent way by typing on a keyboard! I mean one could but it would be many pages long. The reason being is that until you have established a clear foundation with your puppy you are always going to struggle. The whining and barking when you leave the room is the start of separation anxiety…not nice… You really do sound like you have a live wire there! Here is my suggestion… Inside my site http://theonlinedogtrainer.com I have a whole section called Project Moses (he is huntaway/border collie x labrador) where I made a video diary of him from 8 weeks of age. Its all in there…the whole thing so if you want to get a good idea of what to do and what not to do you can watch that. I also cover off how to achieve that foundation I was talking about, AND we go through all the issues that you mention… Here is the deal! Its $1 US to check it out for 3 days during which you can cancel if you don’t like it and that’s it. If you don’t cancel and stay on its $37 US per month and again there is no contract so you can cancel at any time. Enjoy the site…I think you will love it 🙂 Best regards Dan…. P.S My suggestion is to get onto it ASAP as those issues are not going to just sort themselves out over anytime soon.
